But I've come to the conclusion that the DT machine was starting to burn me out...and I really needed a break from the band in order to save my relationship with the other members and keep my DT spirit hungry and inspired.
We have been on an endless write/record/tour cycle for almost 20 years now (of which I have overseen EVERY aspect without a break) and while a few months apart from each other here & there over the years has been much needed and helpful, I honestly hoped the band could simply agree with me to taking a bit of a "hiatus" to recharge our batteries and "save me from ourselves"...
Sadly, in discussing this with the guys, they determined they do not share my feelings and have decided to continue without me rather than take a breather...I even offered to do some occasional work throughout 2011 against my initial wishes, but it was not to be...
While it truly hurts for me to even think of a Dream Theater without Mike Portnoy (hell, my father named the band!!), I do not want to stand in their way...so I have decided to sacrifice myself and simply leave the band so as to not hold them back against their wishes....
Strangely enough, I just read an interview that I recently did that asked me about the future of DT and I talked about "always following your heart and being true to yourself"...sadly I must say that at this particular moment, my heart is not with Dream Theater...and I would simply be "going through the motions", and would honestly NOT be true to myself if I stayed for the sake of obligation without taking the break I felt I needed.
I wish the guys the best and hope the music and legacy we created together is enjoyed by fans for decades to come...I am proud of every album we made, every song we wrote and every show we played....
I'm sorry to all the disappointed DT fans around the world...I really tried to salvage the situation and make it work...I honestly just wanted a break (not a split)...but happiness cannot be forced, it needs to come from within....
You DT fans are the greatest fans in the world and as you all know, I have always busted my ass for you guys and I hope that you will stay with me on my future musical journey, wherever it may lead me....(and as you all know my work ethic, there will surely be no shortage of future MP projects!)

Scheinbar funktioniert eine Band ohne Leidenschaft doch nur bis es einem zu viel wird. War nur eine Frage der Zeit, bei dem Rotz den sie in letzter Zeit veröffentlicht haben.
Naja, am Musikgeschmack mangelt's Dream Theater ja nicht, wie man an den peinlichen Versuchen gute Bands zu kopieren auf ihren letzten Alben hören kann.
Genau das ging mir auch beim Überfliegen des Artikels durch den Kopf
2006/2007 (ich könnte jetzt nachsehen, aber) haben sie live nur genau 2 Lieder der neueren Sparte zum Besten gegeben, kam auch gut an, hatte ich das Gefühl. Dann wird es ja jetzt umso schwieriger, nochmal die Kurve zu kriegen. Oder aber, so ein bisschen frischer Wind... habe ich eigentlich was zu nem Austausch überlesen, wer füllt den Platz?
DREAM THEATER haben bekannt gegeben, dass sie mit Mike Mangini (ANNIHILATOR, EXTREME, JAMES LABRIE) einen neuen Mann hinter der Schießbude haben. Mangini ist damit der offizielle Nachfolger von Mike Portnoy, der die Band verlassen hatte.
Etwas fragwürdig ist allerdings die Art, wie DREAM THEATER ihren neuen Drummer gefunden haben. In einer Art Casting wurde der Neue aus insgesamt sieben Kandidaten gewählt. Das Casting wurde als Video-Dokumentation in drei Teilen unter dem Titel "The Spirit Carries On" veröffentlicht. Irgendwie erinnert das dann doch ein bisschen an die vielgehassten Casting-Shows, die man im Fernsehen erdulden muss.
Folgende Drummer standen zur Auswahl:

Leider eine ziemlich abgespeckte Tour, bei der der Norden auch noch leer ausgeht. Aber vielleicht kommen ja noch Termine dazu.
So lange erfreut man sich am neuen Album. Und das ist wirklich gelungen. Auch mit neuem Drummer. Wobei die Arbeit an den Drums schon leicht gelitten hat.
Insgesamt jedoch ein richtig gutes Album.
On the back of Angels geht gleich typisch los und verspricht ein gutes Album. Build me up, break me down hat sich für mich zu einem der Lieblingssongs von D.T. entwickelt. Lost not forgotten geht da etwas unter. Der Refrain will mir nicht gefallen. Dagegen ist This is the Life eine verdammt schöne Ballade die mir sofort gefallen hat. (Auch wenn ich von meiner Liebsten zu hören bekam "Klingt ein bisschen wie Robbie Williams" Mich erinnert es eher ein wenig an Toto.) Der Anfang von Bridges in the sky ist relativ merkwürdig ... gut. Der Song ist ein echter Hammer. Für mich mit in den D.T. Top Ten. Genau dieser Song weckt die Lust auf ein Konzert. Outcry ist ein ganz typischer D.T. Song den man mögen muss. Far from Heaven (nicht schon wieder Robbie Williams) ist eine nette Ballade aber für meinen Geschmack etwas zu süß. Breaking all Illusions ist dagegen wieder das, was man von D.T. erwartet. Gut gemachter Prog. Rock / Prog. Metal. Beneath the Surface lässt das Album mit einer weiteren Ballade ausklingen.
Es bleibt ein positiver Gesamteindruck und für mich die Gewissheit, ein weiteres Album in den "Alben des Jahres 2011" zu platzieren.
Wenn ich das sage heißt das nichts. Ich sage ja auch, dass Steve Vai, Opeth, Frank Zappa und Frank Marino gut sind. Da stimmen mir hier auch nicht gerade viele Leute zu. Aber unverbindliches Reinhören würde ich dir schon mal empfehlen. Auch in "The dark side of the moon" von D.T. Vor allem in Sheep oder Echoes
